The Maid’s Version Author: Daniel Woodrell Winter’s Bones took our breath away. Woodrell’s new novel, The Maid’s Version, accomplishes prose so piercingly honest that it stuns, as Woodrell wends his readers back to the Ozarks, pivoting around small town families on the edge of survival, and the bonds that tear them apart even while they fight to survive their own tragedies. Their starkness becomes their strength, while it simultaneously destroys them. The Maid’s Version splices ... continue reading...

DVD Reviews: The League: Seaon 4
The League Season 4 I love this show. I have been watching from the beginning of the FIRST episode. This is one of the best, by far in my opinion, comedies out there. For me it has successfully filled the void left by Arrested Development. There are other shows that fill this void as well but this one of the few shows that satisfies my desire for quick-witted humor combined with sophomoric humor. It’s completely a guy’s show, really I can count on one hand how many women I know that ... continue reading...
Book Reviews: Burial Rites
Burial Rites Author: Hannah Kent Reminiscent of Smilla’s Sense of Snow, by Peter Hoeg Hannah Kent’s ephemeral novel about an Icelandic woman who is condemned to death for the murder of her lover and master proves stunningly beautiful amidst sorrow, anguish and the inhumanity shown to her protagonist. Kent’s writing, illuminating, ... continue reading...

Jimmy Olsen twangs his way in and out of Anne Tyler characters, Carl Hiaasen twists, and The Garden of Good and Evil suspense, and yet in every way his originality is his own. An absolute phenomenon, Things in Ditches held me in thrall as Olsen’s main character, Dutch ... continue reading...
Book Reviews: Not for Profit
Not For Profit Author: Glenn Shepard, MD First Chapter: James Patterson Wannabe. As I read: good job, Dr. Shepard. With all the elements of staccato chapters, well prescribed plot, and a thrust of a few syringes and some meds, Shepard’s characters pop from the page. Very nice debut novel, with pop goes the weasel ending! Dr. Scott James is a mess. He’s a mere plastic surgeon charged with two murders. Obsessed with orchids, James is simply not the murder type; but when ... continue reading...
