During the winter we tend to become more like hermits, we want to stay indoors and eat comfort food and can easily put off exercise because it’s too cold. However during the challenges winter brings it is important to still be healthy, here are some tips on how to do it.
Keep working out
It’s chilly, dark in the mornings and nights, and usually more difficult to get out of bed. We are aware. But there are countless advantages to exercise. It helps you relax and is helpful for your physical and mental well-being. Have a backup plan in place to ensure that your fitness regimen doesn’t falter during this cold snap. If the weather is poor and you don’t feel like running in the rain and cold, go to the gym and change your attention to strengthening those important muscle groups.
Consume water
In warmer months, we are more inclined to intentionally fill our glasses, but in the winter, we don’t get as thirsty and consume less. During the season, water is necessary for hydration, digestion help, and toxin removal; therefore, aim to drink eight glasses every day, along with warming beverages.
Obtain vitamin D
A lack of Vitamin D might occur if you spend more time indoors and expose your skin to less sunlight. Getting enough vitamin D is essential for strong bones. Fortified cereals and low-fat dairy products like yogurt and cheese, salmon, and eggs are all excellent sources of vitamin D. Consider taking a Vitamin D supplement if food alone is insufficient.
Eat a nutritious supper as a family
Make a shopping list and pre-plan your meals. Spend some time shopping so you have the ingredients on hand to prepare wholesome meals. Get a calendar, and jot down some food suggestions. You can still enjoy comforting foods more healthily, if you wanted sausage and mash for example you could try swapping to chicken sausages and learn how to cook mashed sweet potatoes instead which are a lot better for you, put some veg on the side and you have a healthy and hearty comfort food dish.
Still get some sun
Even if there is less sunshine available throughout the winter, it’s still necessary to go outside occasionally. It has been demonstrated that sunlight can elevate your mood by increasing the release of the hormone serotonin. For those dealing with the depressive condition known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD), exposure to sunlight is especially crucial.
Keep Warm!
Staying warm during the winter is one of the most crucial things you can do to maintain your health. People over the age of 65 and those who have ongoing medical disorders, such as heart or respiratory issues, are particularly vulnerable to the dangers of the cold. To stay healthy during the winter, you should make sure that you and your family eat regularly to maintain energy levels, keep doors closed and curtains are drawn to block draughts, wear several light layers of warm clothing, and, if you can, have at least one hot meal per day.
