Get Cooking: A Jewish American Family Cookbook
Authors: Rachel Harkham and Doni Zasloff Thomas
My father was Jewish and my ex husband is Jewish. I was raised on Southern cooking (my mother was from West Virginia, a staunch Irish catholic) and yet matzo ball soup was always boiling on the back burner. I am delighted to review this funny and informational Jewish American cookbook – it reads like a compendium of recipes for every family to try, as well as including all kinds of recipes for the Jewish holidays. I put in the CD, which rocks, and settled down to making latkes (which are delicious).
Full of information in a fun format, Rachel and Doni record recipes while detailing fun facts about holidays, words, and music. Their kids join the mix and I couldn’t stop laughing and rocking while I tried some of the best recipes I have found for Hanukkah and Shabbat dinner.
Don’t get me wrong. If you are Jewish you will love it. If you are not Jewish you will love it. As Rachel tells about her family dinners, traditional stories, history and just plain fun facts, the kids include songs, activities and they joy of family cooking. information in a fun format, Rachel and Doni record recipes while detailing fun facts about holidays, words, and music. Their kids join the mix and I couldn’t stop laughing and rocking while I tried some of the best recipes I have found for Hanukkah and Shabbat dinner.
You have to see this book to truly enjoy it. The illustrations are phenomenal, the pictures are fantastic, and you are invited in to be a guest in the warmth of cooking traditional Jewish meals while listening to Rockin’ mama Doni’s songs of fun and celebration.
A fab Hanukkah or Christmas gift to anyone in the family, including kids, who love to cook and enjoy a totally unique book that invites you in to the love of cooking and celebration. Julia Child could use some of Rachel and Doni’s sense of humor and great recipes!
Don’t let this one go!
