A Broad’s View of
Reader’s Digest Treasury of Joy and Inspiration
Christmas is a difficult time for me; I suspect that is true for many of us, although we put up the tree (or not) and swelter within the realm of depression, sadness and not-joy, sadly singing carols and buying presents when we would rather close the covers over our heads and disappear.
So when I opened up the envelope from FSB and popped out Reader’s Digest, Treasury of Joy and Inspiration, I opened it and saw some of my favorite authors in this anthology of “90 years of Reader’s Digest “reads of lasting interest.” The first story I chose to read was on Gratitude by Christopher Reeves, titled “Christopher Reeves’ Decision.”
We all know the story and we all gathered around Mr. Reeves and his family when his horse Buck stopped before a fence. Tragically, Christopher Reeve’s hand entangled in the bridle, and he landing head first on the ground, shredding two vertebrae that left him paralyzed – but never helpless.
This book, divided into sections on joy, gratitude, the holidays, and other subjects of joy and inspiration, qualifies as a necessary item on my book shelf. As the days culminate into the holidays, where we celebrate the joy of life, I reach for it daily, and dwell in the collected stories of every kind of writer out there – all good ones, many famous ones – and I smile. Tomorrow after all is another day.
