Buying and building a home are two completely different experiences. However, you should think of them more as different journeys to the same destination. After all, our dream home is a personal idea that isn’t swayed by building or buying. We’re still going to want the same end result regardless of the circumstances, so what are the major differences between the two? Should you buy a dream home, or is it wiser to build it instead?
Is convenience a concern for you?
The advantage of buying a property is that it’s often far more convenient than building a home. Building a home takes a really long time and there are many complicated steps involved. Of course, it’s usually handled by a professional construction or real estate company, so you don’t personally need to care about the process. However, the exception is if you’re looking to save money on building or buying a home, in which case you’ll need to take care of the process yourself.
How hard are you willing to look for the perfect home?
Buying lavish homes isn’t very time-consuming or complicated, but finding the one that meets your exact needs can be a lot more difficult. If you’re willing to look hard for the perfect home then you’ll eventually find it. However, if you want a more concrete path to your dream home, it may be better to build one to your specification from the beginning. Alternatively, you could consider buying a home that closely matches your preferences and then alter it with renovations. This might be quite expensive but it’s still worth considering.
Is your budget flexible or a set limit?
It’s important to ask yourself if your budget is flexible or if it’s a set limit. If you have a flexible budget, then building a home might be more suitable because you’re more likely to go over your budget. However, if you have a set amount of money that you want to invest in a dream home, then you may want to consider buying one instead. This ensures that you don’t end up spending more money than you want to. If you’re building a home, then you might encounter lots of hidden expenses that can raise the price considerably.
Are you willing to work with a variety of professionals?
Building a home requires you to work with a variety of different professionals. For example, if you’re looking for a place to build a home then you’ll need to work with a land surveyor. You’ll also need to work with a variety of contractors and construction specialists. The more complicated the project, the more people you’ll need to work with. This can be daunting for many people and you may prefer just working with one person to search for and purchase your dream property instead. You could potentially work with a single company that manages all of the subcontracting for your home build, but it may increase the cost of the final build.
