Ah ha, another one of those Grahame-Smith fiction-but-almost-real-except-we-have-some-monsters for you to enjoy novels~!  Mr. Smith fictionally follows Abe Lincoln’s life via the ten journals that Lincoln left to the author by a strange man named Henry Sturges.  Sturgis leaves the authentic priceless journals with Smith with the admonition that he will return for them – at some point.  In the meantime, Smith is to write the story of Abe Lincoln – the adamant vampire hunter.

Smith begins with the death of Abe’s mother, Mrs. Lincoln, by a vampire, and continues on in the same vein.  Fraught with the real details of Lincoln’s life but interpreted by Lincoln’s passion and revenge in killing vampires, the novel sizzles and sears.  Honestly, I thought it was a true story there for a while (not your brightest reviewer on the planet!).

Thinking of Abe Lincoln in any capacity as a murderer – even of vampires is a creative stretch, but if you have to go there, well, Mr. Smith makes it seductive and almost believable.  In the novel (just to keep you all on the page of reality!), Lincoln wants to free the African American slaves because they are the main sustenance for the vampire community of his time.  They love the blood!

What I truly enjoyed was reading the history of Abe Lincoln even if strewn with all the vampire-gore-filled killings.  Definitely an interesting and creative twist as a fictional biography and definitely worth reading.
If you like sci-fi fiction, this is definitely the ONE to read.  And since “vampires” are so in, this is a timely rendition of a great President and man in a vampire ridden world.  The author did an excellent job of intertwining the surreal with the real and I can’t imagine anyone not enjoying the outcome.
