War HorseI read a lot of reviews of War Horse before watching it. Because of this I was very excited to see this film. I have particular expectations going into a Spielberg film. I had just watched TinTin last week and really think it was one of the better features of last year. I put in War Horse with similar expectations. I was wrong. I hate being wrong. I would have been forced to watch a Twilight marathon than sit through War Horse. This was Avatar bad.Spielberg's adaptation of ... continue reading...

DVD Reviews: Immortals
Immortals [Blu-ray]If you’re into Greek mythology don’t watch this flick. It will piss you off. Fortunately I am not into mythology but unfortunately I was still left a bit sour. If you're going to mess up Greek mythology, I guess you might as well make it pretty. Immortals was directed by Tarsem Singh who also directed The Cell and The Fall, both of which are decent movies that are a bit of style of substance, which also happens here. I think Tarsem is just known for making a beautiful movie ... continue reading...
DVD Reviews: The Killing
The Killing: The Complete First Season [Blu-ray]I've seen a lot of shows in the genre, including all the CSIs, NCISes, Criminal Minds (plus Suspect Behavior), and so on and so on. You get my point, I've seen a lot and it's pretty hard for a new show to impress or surprise me. This one is different. Refreshingly different. The whole political allegory coupled with a cautionary tale about fascism, propaganda and the amorality of technology really worked here. Rarely do you get this sort of thing in animated movies back in the 70s. The fact that it is coupled with an overall "fairy tale-ish" look that seems more at home among those cheap "ages 3 to 8" cartoons makes the viewing experience a very unique ... continue reading...
DVD Reviews: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Director Tomas Alfredson caught my attention a few years ago with his Swedish film Let the Right One in, which in my opinion is the best vampire film I've seen. This is a very different movie, but he still uses very similar techniques. He shoots several shots from a distance which sort of sets the mood of the story dealing with espionage, the setting is also very dark and grayish, and the story ... continue reading...
