If you feel as though you are not sleeping as well as you could be then you’re not alone. So many people find it hard to sleep at night, but you don’t need to resort to sleep aids or tablets to help yourself. In fact, a small change to your lifestyle may be all you need.
Going for a brisk walk every day will help you to lower your body’s fat content and it will also help you to stop being awake for as long at night. Exercise is great because it helps to boost the natural sleep hormones within your body. Studies have found that postmenopausal women who work out for 3 hours a week fall asleep way easier than those who exercise less often. Just make sure that you watch the timing of your workouts. If you exercise close to bedtime, then this can be stimulating so make sure that you avoid this if possible.
Be Comfortable
You should try and sleep without your television being turned on if possible. The light from your TV will keep you awake and it will also stop you from winding down. That’s not the only distraction that you have to watch out for. Ambience can also impact your sleep quality, so make sure that your room is quiet, dark and also cool. If you can ensure that this is the case, then you will be able to promote sleep with ease.
Start a Ritual
As a child, your parent may have read you a story and then tucked you in bed at night. This worked well because it was a comforting ritual that helped you to drift right off. Even as an adult, you may benefit from a bedtime ritual. Drink a hot glass of milk, or even run yourself a bath. You can also listen to some calming music before bed if you want. Either way, there are a lot of things you can do to try and help yourself here, so make sure that you explore the options that are available to you and use them to your advantage.
Buy a Comfy Mattress
It’s so important that you buy a comfortable mattress to sleep on. It’s never been easier for you to buy a mattress topper to sleep on the side, or to get a new bed delivered right to your door. If you have had your bed for quite some time, you’re probably due an upgrade anyway. By buying a new bed, you may find that you sleep way better and that you are able to stay asleep for longer which is always a bonus if you find that you continually wake up in the night.
Eat before Bed
If you have a grumbling stomach then this can be distracting to say the least. Avoid eating a large meal two or three hours before bed. If you are hungry before bed then make sure that you eat a light snack so you can avoid waking up in the middle of the night. This will help you to sleep far better.
