Struck By Lightning

I’m not a big fan of Chris Colfer, I kind of dug his role in the first season of Glee but the next few seasons felt like retreads. I love coming of age films set in High School so I was eager to give him a second chance. Was that dumb of me? Yes. I really wanted to like this move with some of my current favorite actors in it you know my fondness for Allison Janney and Rebel Wilson. Unfortunately I could not like this film at all.

Synopsis time

A high school boy desperate to escape the idiocy of the people in his hometown tries to create a way in which he can move to New York, attend the college of his dreams and do something other than live in the footsteps of his drunken, divorced mother. Along the way he blackmails his fellow students into contributing to his literary magazine and discovers what it’s like to feel accomplished. Does he get accepted into the college of his dreams? Is he going to make a difference and follow his life goal?

Colfer chews the scenery making his character the only one with any dimension in the film everyone else is in 2D here. We are not allowed to care about any other characters in this entire film? Allison Janney crushes her role as his nearly junky mother but we are meant to hate her and I had more sympathy with her than any of the other characters. Colfer just plays his character as too unlikable and self-important (I know it was kind of the point but the viewer needs someone that they can relate to).

Chris Colfer please do not attempt script writing again because this movie is honestly just so out of place and awkward. I was bored to tears trying to get interested in this cliché high school movie but I couldn’t finish it so this is a review of the first half. A lot of one liners just being said like they are first time actors in a high school production play. I didn’t laugh once.

For the entire run time we are force fed every high school cliché and then meant to feel for a nonredeemable character does he actually realize how self-important he is by the end? Nope.

Fortunately the blu-ray quality here is great.

However the special features here are awful we get some interviews patting themselves on the back for making a bad movie. There is a scene breakdown for the best scene in the movie that is all too brief. We are also some deleted scenes and bloopers that I skipped.

Overall this movie will work for people that are in their teens and feel alienated. Adults (who it looks like this films was casted for) will see its paper thing unlikable characters. The characters that aren’t paper thing are just annoying. The script is typical and the lightning metaphor is tired.
