Bait 3D

As you all know I get all gleeful and stuff during shark movies. No matter how bad I usually enjoy them (even Jersey Shore Shark Attack). So Bait is a no-brainer for me.

The real question is

What kind of shark film is this?

The cover shows a shark in a supermarket with a tag line of “Cleanup on Aisle 7.” To me this shows that the film is going to be a completely absurdest romp. It’s a shark in a supermarket, and really, how more original can you get? That was not the case at all.

This movie is about a group of people who get trapped in a Supermarket after a Tsunami hits the coast of Queensland, Australia. But they soon find out that they have more to worry about than being in a flooded grocery store, there’s a 12-foot shark swimming around them, and it’s hungry.

Here is where you want me to say this is pure campy fun.

It isn’t…this is a solid movie. Yes the premise is insane but the acting brings it together. The talent in this movie is great. We have the lead from Chronicle (one of my favorite performances of the year Alex Russell), the lead from The Loved Ones (another of this year’s favorites Xavier Samuel) and the guy from Nip Tuck (Julian McMahon), is there room for any more Aussie talent? Nope.

It was refreshing to see how serious everybody involved took this movie. It definitely adds to the overall quality of the movie and its nice to see that this is a movie that took its audience serious and didn’t treated them like a bunch of popcorn-eating-no-brainers, who only wanted to see lots of blood and nudity. Is it all that scary? No not really. It’s a hit-and-miss movie to be sure, but the hits definitely outweigh the misses and the picture easily elevates above the corny made for television ventures that are so prevalent and, with a few exceptions, tired and poorly made.

Bait 3D bites into Blu-ray with a top-notch 1080p 3D transfer. The image is clean and the direction is ok. Some of the CGI is cheese but does that really matter? Bait 3D swims onto Blu-ray with a high quality Dolby TrueHD 7.1 lossless soundtrack. The worst thing here is the special features are only contain storyboard art. That was really disappointing.

Could Bait have done more?

Yes. But was it still better than have the mainstream theatrical features I’ve seen this year? Yes. So SUCK IT straight to home video,  shark films are my thing, and you should learn to love them too.
