21 & Over
Drunk and crude.
That’s what my generation seems to be about. With films like The Hangover, American Pie and Jackass these two words define summer movie season now (other than the even worse word SUPERHERO). Honestly I don’t think films like this are funny. They can be funny (The Hangover wasn’t that bad but it was still the most homophobic film id seen in years) however they lack the sincerity of other comedies (Mr. Apatow you nail sincerity). I was kinda excited to see 21 & Over so here is what I though…
But first a synopsis
When Straight-A college student Jeff Chang’s two best friends take him out for his 21st birthday on the night before an important medical school interview, what was supposed to be a quick beer becomes a night of humiliation, over indulgence and utter debauchery. Sounds like American Pie meets The Hangover…and it is…with an unfortunate spin.
The movie is written like the crap I used to come up with in class when I was a freshman in college. The film is safely juvenile and with a synthetic heart. That makes it sound much worse than it actually was. It wasn’t an awful movie…just kind of what you would expect and a bit worse but a very easy watch. However I don’t regret the viewing because of the amount of potential.
I’ll say it now,
Miles Teller is going to be one of the top actors on the screen in the next few years, he’s just got to stay away from projects. He kinda nails his role, but he also has some of the worst dialogue I’ve ever had to deal with listening to. The rest of the cast is OK and plays their roles well. Had the actors been allowed to improvise I assume it would have been a less stale fish.
The audio and video qualities are pretty good on this one. This is not the best I’ve ever seen but certainly not bad although there aren’t any real cinematography moments to judge it from. The special features are kinda weak here too, but it all seems like a rush job when it came to making the film. We are given a feature about Jeff Chang’s levels of drunkenness, a feature about the tower of power, and the rest of the generic special features.
Overall, this film is nonsense but the people who created it know this and don’t try to pretend it’s any good. This is a good film to watch with your friends and I imagine, once it is released on DVD, will be a popular film for drinking games (ill take a shot every time they say Jeff Chang). Beer Pong anyone?
