The House on the Cliff
Author: Charlotte Williams
Page turners beware!
Ms. Williams new novel will thrum in your fingers as you burn the pages reading it. A psychological thriller both elegant and stark; thrilling and thoughtful; beastly and brave: buyer beware! This is one novel you will read until the coffee gets cold and dinner sits in the oven – burnt! A cliff hanger to treasure.
Jessica Mayhew, a sharp, brilliant psychotherapist has just learned that her husband has been unfaithful. At the same time, a man with a button phobia walks into her office and claims her life. Gwydion Morgan is the son of a renowned stage director, and yet he cannot see or touch a button without great fear.
The mother of two girls with a great marriage and a phenomenal career, Jessica feels lucky and loved. One day she receives a photograph in the mail with no return address of a sinister looking man. She thinks nothing of it. It comes one month after her husband Bob has told her that he had a one night stand that “meant nothing.” And yet it shakes Jessica’s sense of who she is, and what her marriage and family are. When a new handsome client comes to her door. He has Koumpounophobia – a fear of buttons. As an astute therapist, Jessica knows this is a difficult phobia to cure, and thinks that her friend Dougie, a cognitive therapist a doorway down her office, could probably help Gwydion better than she can. She asks if he wants the referral but Gwydion says no. Gwydion will be starring in an upcoming major new period drama – a breakthrough in his career – where he has to wear a uniform with buttons in 3 months’ time and wants Jessica to help him get over his phobia. So starts Jessica’s strange descent into not only Gwydion’s madness but her own.
Beautifully written, Ms. Williams charming and flawed protagonist transforms into one of the most human of all protagonists, as we weld our way into the world of psychotherapy and humanness. As Jessica thrills to the chase to help Gwydion she allows her anger at her husband to skew her thoughts and the path becomes one of danger and deception. An absolutely thrilling novel, with those one of a kind characters who bewitch us and hold us captive in their thrall. I read it twice, and went without the burnt filet mignon!
