The year is current. In Edinburgh, three friends find themselves bound by their love of art. They are also bound by a restlessness in themselves that finds them yearning for something. Mike Mackenzie is a young, retired millionaire. He has sold his software company and sits in luxury and idleness, bored and contemplative. He collects fine art.

Allen Cruickshank, a banker, also loves art. He is experiencing a painful divorce and cleaves to his friends to get him through.

Professor Robert Gissing teaches art, and is enraged that most of the world’s great art is inaccessible, stored in private collections, safes, and corporate boardrooms.

The three friends attend an art auction where Mike encounters by chance another attendee, once a boy that he knew in school. The school bully, the anarchist, Chib Calloway is now a crime boss with a recent interest in collecting art.

The three friends formulate a plan to steal paintings stored in a warehouse from the National Gallery, replacing them with incredibly good copies. Enter an artist and his girlfriend who agree to help them – and get greedy. They are siting the warehouse where an invaluable amount of art that cannot be displayed sits, claiming their total interest. When Mike pulls in Chib Calloway to assist in the heist, their troubles begin.

With a plot that endures betrayal after betrayal, this fast paced thriller packs a wollop. The heist itself becomes riddled with problems, and Mike and Allen are no match for Gissing’s hidden agenda.

A detective that won’t let up, the girlfriend that blackmails, inquisitive auctioneers and a Hell’s Angel named Hate all throw right punches as Mike tries to rewind and second guess all the participants and outrun them. The ending is dynamite – a perfect ending to an intricate labyrinth that Mike enters – and exits successfully.

Great writing, fast paced stunner with fascinating plot twists, this is definitely the heist of the year.
