Divorce is in the Air
Author: Gonzalo Torne
I am appreciative of great vocabulary, prose that flows in stream of consciousness and the reputation of Gonzalo Torne, a new astounding Spanish writer of fame. However, Divorce is in the Air follows Joan-Marc, a shallow, narcissistic failure as he explains to his second wife why his marriage to his first, American wife Helen failed. Helen is this that and the other, his dad committed suicide, his mom is a mental case and Helen is a nympho who blew him away. Joan-Marc writes this letter because his second marriage is also on the skids.
Besides the wonderful writing, there is not much to place our hopes on as the protagonist whines and twattles his way through his sordid ruined life – we simply don’t care. Why, I don’t know, but my sympathy laid with the author who had to write this tome and could not just stuff it into a drawer. There is no doubt that Torne is talented, but Divorce is in the Air is not the Right Stuff for a marvelous and engaging novel about a suffocating, imbecilic man complaining with marvelous words.
Sorry but this did not make my best read list, only my boring read list! I am sure Torne will come back however with another, better novel! There is simply no way I could conjure up 500 words to describe this man’s misery so I won’t even try.
