Cancel the Wedding
Author: Carolyn Dingman
Southern and simply delightful, Cancel the Wedding reads like a cake walk, sweet and irresistible. A pure delight as a summer read I could carry this book around in the fall and winter as well; it swells with characters both real and tasty!
Olivia is a mess. She has a career driven job, and is very successful at it, and a fiancé Leo who drives her a little – well, batty. When her mother dies from cancer, Olivia and her sister Georgia are stumped at her mother’s request for burial. Olivia’s mother wants Olivia and Georgia to scatter her ashes in the little Southern town that her mother has never spoken of. In fact, Olivia and Georgia have never heard her mother speak of her childhood or Huntley, Georgia – ever. So why does Olivia feel compelled to go back to the tiny town her mother must have hated so much?
Olivia heads to Georgia with her fourteen year old niece Logan to spread her mother’s ashes, a mother whom Olivia was never close to when she was alive. But Olivia wants to know who her mother really was, and she figures the best place to start is Huntley. And…let’s face it, Olivia is not so sure about her groom to be or her job, and needs the time to reevaluate some choices.
As Olivia and Logan turn up at The James Oglethorpe Inn, a small inn in the town of Tillman, on the banks of Lake Huntley, Olivia is still trying to figure out a way to get her elder sister, Logan’s mother Georgia, to join her to scatter her mother’s ashes. But then, Olivia and Logan discover that the town of Huntley is actually under water. They meet a handsome man, Elliott, who owns the town of Tillman’s only newspaper, and he agrees to help them unravel the mystery of her mother’s life, and the mystery of her underwater birthplace, Huntley.
As Olivia and Logan dig into her mother’s past, Olivia begins to re-evaluate her own life and to make peace with the tragedies that appear in her dead mother’s life.
Succulent and tart, Cancel the Wedding proves a serving of sweet and bitter, bound together like flour and eggs to reveal the truths that family contains.
