Most of us will hopefully never need this advice, but you never know what is around the corner, and if you have never been in trouble with the law before, it can be a scary prospect trying to do the right thing and minimize the harm to you and your reputation.
With that in mind, here are some tips to help you handle things right if you find yourself having legal troubles.
-
Do not resist arrest
One of the worst things you can do if you are dealing with legal troubles is to resist arrest should the time come that the police get involved.
So many people think that because they don’t think they have done anything wrong, they have the right to resist arrest. This is kind of understandable, but it is a really bad idea because it will only escalate the situation and you could find yourself being hit with more charges.
It is a much safer, not to mention smarter, option, to let the police arrest you and to then sort things out at the precinct. The more compliant you are, the less likely it is the situation will get out of hand, ad the more likely it is the officers will listen to what you have to say, so you will be able to get things straightened out much more quickly.
-
Hire the best lawyer you can afford
Whether you are guilty or innocent and whether it is a minor charge or a major one, it is really important that, if you can afford to hire an attorney, you hire the best =one you can afford to represent you.
Whether it’s the best DUI attorney in the area or a crack business attorney, having someone on your side who knows the law inside out and who has lots of experience in handling similar cases to your own, will make all the difference in how well you sare trusted and how quickly things are straightened out.
If you can not afford an attorney, then one will be assigned to you, and you should let them help you because it is really hard to effectively represent yourself whether you have done anything wrong or not.
-
Don’t try to rationalize your way out of it
When you have legal problems, it can be tempting to try and talk yourself out of the situation or explain your side of the story. This is not something you should do until your attorney is present. After all, once you have been read your rights, anything you say can be used as evidence against you, and unless you have taken legal advice you will not know what it is and is not prudent to say to the authorities. It’s much better to stay calm and say nothing until you have a lawyer who can help you navigate the legal system carefully.
-
Keep your cool
The worst thing you can do if you have been arrested is to get violent or to start shouting and cussing, This will not only not put you in a good light but it could also escalate the situation and harm your case in a number of ways.
It’s really hard to keep your cool when you feel like you haven’t done anything wrong or when you are scared about the situation you have found yourself in, but if you can take a deep breath and focus on maintaining neutral body language, it will help you so much in terms of your legal troubles and inside your head too.
-
Listen to your attorney
Your attorney generally knows the law better than you and knows what you need to do to minimize the situation and get the best possible outcome you can. So, even if you don’t like what they are saying to you, you would be foolish to not, at the very least, seriously consider taking their advice.
If you really don’t want to do that ask for another attorney to see what they say, if there is a consensus, then it really would be foolish not to take the advice that is being given to you by someone who absolutely does know the law and what is likely to happen to you.
If you get into legal difficulties, it is important you stay calm, comply with any reasonable requests and get expert help as soon as possible, it’s a really stressful situation to find yourself in, but if you keep your cool, you can get through it.
