Moving into a new house is an exciting time, even if it is the most stressful thing that you’ll ever do. Once you’ve dealt with the nightmare of packing up all of your stuff and moving it to your new place, you probably want to kick back and relax. But there are still some important things that you need to sort out before you can call this place home. Security is a big concern that a lot of people forget about when they move house, but you need to take certain steps to protect yourself from burglars. Before you settle in, make sure that you follow these simple security tips.
Change Outside Locks
You never know how many people the previous owners gave their keys out to, and you don’t want a bunch of strangers having access to your house. It’s not likely that anybody is going to break in, but it’s not a risk that you want to take. It’s not too much trouble to call a locksmith and get them to change all of the locks. Some door locks are quite weak as well so it’s always a good idea to upgrade them when you first move in.
Check The Quality Of The Doors
The quality of doors varies quite a lot and if your house has flimsy, hollow doors, or weak door frames, you’re just making things easier for burglars. This is a particular problem if you move into a house that’s been around the block a few times. It’s best to check the quality of the doors and if they are weak, just get some new ones on.
Secure The Windows
If burglars can’t get in through the doors, they’ll try the windows next. If you want to keep your home secure, you need to make sure that you have good quality locks on the windows and get some window alarms on there as well. If you have any trees out in the garden, it’s easy for people to climb up and get at the top windows, so you should cut back the lower branches.
Meet The Neighbors
You might hate the idea of socializing with the neighbors, but it’s always a good idea if you want to boost your security. Your neighbors can keep an eye on the house if you’re away and let you know if there are any shady looking people lurking around. When you move in, make an effort to knock on some doors and introduce yourself. You could even plan a housewarming party if you’re feeling adventurous. You never know, you might make some new friends.
Install Some Security Lights
Money is going to be tight after you’ve moved house, so you need cheap ways to make your home more secure. Some motion activated security lights won’t cost much at all but they’re a great way to scare off any potential burglars when they get near the house.
Once you make these simple changes around your new house, you can start unpacking and making the place your own.
