It is never too late to be what you might have been. These are words that were first penned by the famous George Eliot, more correctly known as the pseudonym of Mary Anne Evans. These words settle something deep inside of us, that often as we take paths in life we aren’t taking others. This means that as we age, we can often feel that our best years have passed us by without us taking the affirmative action to have steered it correctly.
Even people who are highly successful can feel the same way. Sure, you may have developed an illustrious career, but maybe you feel a little down that your plans to learn guitar fluently have failed in the twenty years you have held that ambition. Of course, you are the final arbiter of your decision making and goal setting, and no one has any right to chastise you in any way. It’s extremely likely that you are actually much better than you think you are in a whole range of fields, and have developed just fine.
To stop cobwebs from forming however, it’s worthwhile to consider why people consider themselves too old for certain tasks, and more importantly what these tasks are. With the following motivational advice, you’ll realize you’re never too old to be what you might have been. Proof of this is Ben’s mom, Zippy of Champagne Living, who at 64 years old is loving her life as a travel blogger. She started writing in her mid-50’s and is one of those people who just decided to live her dreams.
Education
It’s never too late to educate yourself in matters that you have always wanted to. People may think that if they’re not young and spry, heading to college is only a waste of years for a job that may never come. They may also see heading to a bricks and mortar institution as a waste of time, especially considering the job they currently held. While it’s never too late to go back to the educactional drawing board, there can be more comfortable ways to do so.
For example, studying an engineering management degree online can help you retain a prestigious degree while not giving up your tight schedule too much. To settle fears that you are past your prime learning capacity, you should realize that simply because you have led a career for some time, that doesn’t mean that time is wasted in a new field. With a new qualifiaction under your belt, your prospective employer may see many transferable skills under your belt, and the ambition to educate and change courses later in life. You’d be suprised just how much stock this holds. If you truly feel like you need a change, this can be the most promising option.
Travel
Traveling the world is not something you do in one year, even with the funds to enjoy that process. It’s a lifelong effort of novelty, care and appreciation for world culture that helps you attain a sense of comfort in the unknown. It will also broaden your horizons to no untold degree. This can be exceptional for the wandering spirit inside you, but it can also mean plenty for your wonder.
When we get older and secure in our family lives, we may keep in touch with vacations that are safe for our kids. This can be easy to rest in until they grow, and even after. Remember though that even with children, novel experiences can be found. You may decide that skiing hasn’t been your strong suit until the age of forty. If you have the capacity to, why not try now? Trying new things like this will always help you feel your best self, and help you forge memories you may never have thought possible. You have plenty of time for activities like this, and to explore new environments. There’s more of the world than you can ever explore in the first place. Getting started could renew your excitement as an Earth citizen and give you plenty to enjoy.
Self-Reliance
This heading is in no way meant to denigrate or marginalize in the slightest. With that disclaimer, it can be important to realize that sometimes, we may not have actually exercised a huge amount of self-reliance in our lives. We may have regrets, or we may have simply gone from home life to educational life to married life, always protected by someone in our household. If an issue occurs we can often feel ourselves like a fish out of water, afraid of the lack of sheltered environment we know. This can happen to anyone, which is unfortunate.
However, practicing self-reliance, no matter how old you are, can help you become more comfortable with yourself over time. There is absolutely no reason to doubt yourself in these matters. Starting a new hobby, researching a new topic, making friends in a new environment can be tremendously supportive to your confidence and skillset if you give yourself to the task alone, no matter how old you are. While no person is an island, this effort can help you feel confident in your personality – and this can help you as you age more than you know.
Remember, you are absolutely, irrevocably never too old for anything on this list, or anything else for that matter. With this attitude, you’re sure to make the rest of your life, the best of your life.
