If you have hired a foreign talent whose contract is about to end, the question of rehiring or extending comes up. Should you keep them on, or have you both gotten the best out of each other and the road has come to an end? First off, we have to realize why you chose to hire them in the first place. Were they hired because you were trying to fill a skills gap? Did you find that they were going to provide effective training because of their wealth of professional acumen or knowledge? Maybe you hired them because at the time, you didn’t have any other viable candidate and they were only too happy to move to another country to further their career. Let’s look at all this and more.
Have they made an impact on the team?
If they were hired in a leadership role, maybe as a manager, did they make a good impact? Can you imagine, someone else running the team as they have? Can they inspire and motivate the team as well as this foreign hire has? Sometimes, foreign hires set the bar and they bring a new level of expertise and professionalism to a business. You don’t want to lose that by sending them back home. You might end up unraveling all the work they did, by putting someone else in their role. So it really is a case of, can you afford to lose them or not, in a leadership position? Most of the time, businesses do not want to lose their leaders in middle management, so choose wisely who you can replace them with and compare and contrast them.
Maybe they can’t go back
There is a lot of political turmoil going on in the world right now and if your foreign talent’s home country is in a spate of violence, sending them back home could endanger them. Work with an asylum lawyer to help them to stay in the country. They need to prove that returning to the country they are from, will pose a danger to life, liberty, or health. This is probably pretty easy, as many nations that are under military regimes and dictatorships of some kind, will be known by the legal authorities. However, specific cases still need to be detailed, such as where your talent is from, why their life would be in danger, and what they can bring to the country, i.e. their history of working for you.
Enticing them to stay
But what if the foreign talent wants to go back home? This is a situation that every business finds challenging. How do you make them stay? You have to entice them with a better financial and bonuses package, a better role, more features such as their own office, a company car, discounts for the gym and other things.
When a foreign talent is about to go back home due to their contract ending, it’s going to be a challenge to keep them if they want to go, and also if they want to stay but they have some hurdles to jump over. You can help them in both cases.
