As the festive season is now well and truly upon us, it can offer the perfect opportunity to kick back and relax with a good film. With our busy working and social lives it can often be hard to keep up with all of the great releases on offer, so here’s a look back over some cinematic greats that you may have missed.
The Martian
If you’re looking for a truly immersive experience to give you time to digest that Christmas meal, then this year’s The Martian would be the perfect distraction. Starring Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded all alone on the planet of Mars, it managed to be harrowing, uplifting and even funny thanks to the movie star’s exceptional performance.
The Martian won rave reviews from most publications upon release, and it already looks set to pick up more than a few Oscars when the awards ceremony takes place in late February 2016.
Guardians of the Galaxy

For a space adventure of a slightly different tone, 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy provides a masterclass in comic-book sci-fi fun. The James Gunn directed movie managed to subvert the trend of somewhat po-faced comic book adaptations through its sheer exuberance and off-the-cuff humour.
The movie managed to further Marvel Comic’s quest to become the world’s biggest movie brand, and already entertainment blogs featured on the Euro Palace site have suggested that we may even see a Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers collaboration in the near future.
Despite the blog quoting James Gunn as stating that we’re highly unlikely to see characters such as the Hulk in the next instalment of Guardians of the Galaxy, the financial rewards offered by a crossover of these two phenomenally-successful series could be too much for Marvel to ignore.
The Dark Knight Rises
Another comic-book adaptation that can provide a good dose of escapism for your holiday season is The Dark Knight Rises. This followed the iconic Batman character as he came out of retirement once more to tackle the somewhat humorously-voiced Bane villain who sought to destroy Gotham City.
Although the film didn’t deliver quite the same amount of drama as provided by Heath Ledger’s fascinating portrayal of the Joker in The Dark Knight, the movie still managed to make Warner Bros over $1 billion, and even became the subject of an online slots casino game at the Euro Palace site alongside a range of movie-themed slots such as Jurassic Park and Terminator 2.
And with Ben Affleck playing the caped crusader in spring’s highly-anticipated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it looks like we might just see Batman’s most exhilarating performance yet.
