10 – Cabin In The Woods

Holy Sh*t was this movie fun. Cabin in the Woods is a spin on the horror genre from writer’s Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, without giving away the spoilerish parts of the plot, I’ll simply say that it involves 5 friends who fit the horror movie stereotypes (Jock, Slut, Party-Guy, Nerd, Virgin) who go to a cabin in the woods to party and get away from it all. Trouble is, its never really safe to go to a cabin in the woods is it? ??To be honest, the less you know about this film, the more awesome it will be.

9 – Skyfall

Skyfall

Best Bond villain ever…nuff said. Maybe best Bond film ever.

8 – Life of Pi

I was truly expecting to hate this movie but I found it to be as touching and human as any other this year. This movie had it all it looked great, it sounded great and it was the first movie that the 3D did not piss me off during. And if you think that the story wasn’t moving then you have no heart.

7 – Argo

I love when I put my foot in my mouth (not literally), but this movie just shut me up. After years and years of bitching about movies saying “They don’t make them like they used to,” Ben Affleck made one like they used to! Holy sh*t this film feels like Sidney Lumet made it 40 years ago. Thank you Mr. Affleck for shutting me up.

6 – Take This Waltz

Take This Waltz

Ever been gut punched by a movie? Take This Waltz is a magnificent achievement from everyone involved, not the least of which being a magnificent work from Michelle Williams. As told by Sarah Polly (the director) it’s a moving and incredibly true exploration into an aspect of life that is rarely explored. Polley’s approach lacks the kind of dramatic punch that one often finds in films dealing with the subject of adultery. She removes it of all the typical bells and whistles that could make something like this appeal to a mainstream Hollywood audience and instead creates a soft, touching and remarkably human film. It’s something that deserves to be admired.

5 – Killer Joe

For those of us sick- bastards looking for something off the wall, it’s one of the must-sees of the year. Not as surreal as Blue Velvet, but not as poorly crafted trash as a Grindhouse movie. It’s in an area somewhere in-between, and I can’t wait to see it again. Trailer trash noir.

4 – Detention

This may seem like a wasted pick but f*ck it I had more fun watching this movie than any other of the year. Detention is a sharp, extremely fast paced parody/homage/comedy/slasher/WTF?!?! film for people who watch a LOT of movies. I honestly don’t know if it would have been as enjoyable if I hadn’t understood most of the references to teen culture, movies, bands and high-school life that peppered the movie every thirteen seconds, but I got more than a few and thought it was perfect.

3 – Bullhead

I really wanted to put this as my #1 of the year. Bullhead is an extremely intense piece of cinema. With an incredible performance from Matthias Schoenaerts, gorgeous camera work, and a huge injection of originality, Bullhead should not be missed by anyone especially those who are looking for something different when it comes to movies. This is one of the most emotional and strong films I saw all year. This movie reminds me of early Scorsese and I can’t wait to see the next feature with this director.

2 – Silver Linings Playbook

Silver Linings Playbook

Man I do have problems with this film, but it still made #2 on my list. Silver Linings Playbook is full of creativity and minimal on romance clichés. It is hands down one of the best romantic comedies to be made within the last couple of years. This film contains many laugh out loud moments and a number of scenes that will warm your heart to the point where you can’t help but leave the theater smiling. Silver Linings Playbook is the perfect date movie that both men and women can easily enjoy. It was really beginning to feel like a Billy Wilder film and but I realize that this is not Billy’s world.

1 – Looper

Looper

It treats its audience with respect and isn’t afraid to keep you them of the loop for a while as it teases them with false and sometimes seemingly false information. It is well designed and acted and features a wonderfully multifaceted and intelligent story, which rewards patience and concentration with a fantastic ending. Not an adaptation, not a sequel or remake, but a fresh idea from the mind of an immensely talented young filmmaker. In a perfect world, Looper would be the game changer it deserves to be, slapping Hollywood studios across the face and announcing that not everything has to be a PG-13 franchise based on a comic book.
