Welcome to the Symphony
The Review Broads Goes for Notes and Music!
Musical notes – da da da dah da da da dah – Beethoven’s 5th Symphony is so recognizable that the notes tell us immediately whom we will be listening to and is usually the first Beethoven Symphony that we recognize! Carolyn Sloan has done a wonderful job with thrusting three darling mice into the mix and drama in her child’s story book Welcome to the Symphony to introduce children to not only Beethoven but also each instrument and where it fits in the symphony and the music. With a panel on the side with 19 buttons that represent instruments and sound, all your child has to do is press the button to hear how that fits into the orchestra. The book is illustrated brilliantly by James Williamson, with simple, Madelaine like illustrations.
What impresses me the most?
The idea that we can introduce even our three year olds to classical music with a beautifully illustrated story and book while teaching them what notes and sound each instrument makes is genius to me. What better gift for the holiday than the Joyous 5th Symphony and what a wonderful introduction to a classical music orchestra. The sound of the clarinet, the meaning of melody, the harmony of many instruments, what the A note sounds like, what the theme is of the 5th – and the ability to dance while listening is a wonderful fulfilling gift.
Quality
The quality of this book is superb and this will be a child and family favorite for many years. Like Maestro Classics, Welcome to the Symphony is a gift of music and joy with a simple story line and glistening illustrations. One of the best I have seen in years – Bravo to Welcome to the Symphony – make sure this is on your gift list this year. It certainly is on mine!
Who was Beethoven? What is classical music?
From start of the orchestra tuning up, to Beethoven, to the interactive sound and music buttons on the side, this darling storybook teaches as the 5th Symphony, and the job of the orchestra as gently as rain falling, with fun and entertainment for all, in simple language and unforgettable sound buttons.
HIGH 5 Ms. Sloan and Mr. Williamson
