November is all about family to me. I just have great memories of hanging out with the family and watching movies together, it’s probably why I’m such a movie nerd. I remember watching movies every year on thanksgiving right before football came on and then watching movies after it ended. There was a year we watched Scream (when that came out, we all thought I was so clever) and there were times where we watched Necessary Roughness. It always brought the family together no matter what we watched. Here is a list of films that you need to watch with the family around this great holiday.
HOOP DREAMS
Yeah, you were waiting for it. My absolutely favorite film of the 1990s. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen this movie but every time is a truly remarkable experience. It’s the kind of movie that’s sustaining, and there are so many transcendent, revealing moments that stand out that aren’t even about basketball, its about family and so much more.
RAISING ARIZONA
Great performances are all well and good, but it takes pinpoint control on behalf of both directors and cast to deliver the exaggerated acting found in Raising Arizona. The opening engagement sequence to the relationships hardships of H.I. and Ed to form a family by stealing an “extra” from another to the final battle, Raising Arizona is an immeasurably charming and quotable film.
CINEMA PARADISO
One of my favorite films of the 1980s. It is the near-perfect melding of direction, acting, script, sound track, and cinematography, yeah everything. It is quite simply the story of a human life and its tragedies and triumphs within the context of a vocation of film.
THE INTOUCHABLES
This is one of the most unique, beautiful and honest friendships ever committed to film. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry… a delightful celebration of everything in life that makes it worthwhile. The film’s simplicity is delightfully misleading: the script is a masterpiece of comedy writing, and however good the rest of the cast is, the central duo is magical.
Two foreign films and an American classic that will surely delight the entire adult family.
