And I’m not talking about bull-terriers like Clem (although he can be a bit of a bully every now and then).
We were lucky.
Ben was a pretty big guy growing up and while he took his share of knocks, I’m not sure that he was really bullied. Of course, back then it was a whole different world. Today’s kids have so much more on their minds. School is harder, play is rarer, and the means kids have gotten meaner.
So, how do you teach your kids about bullying? Since Ben has always been a film fanatic, the easiest ways to open conversations here have been through movies. We’d sit and watch a film and it would open the door to discussion. Now as an adult, he’s our favorite movie and DVD reviewer here on the review broads, so I feel GOOD about all of those hours that we watched movies together.
Why are we telling you all of this? The broads are a member of the Netflix Stream Team, a program that gives us access to great movies to watch as we stream them directly to our TV sets. Over the next few months we’ll be sharing what we learn with YOU.
Since October is anti-bullying month, Netflix has created a wonderful list of movies for both young and older children that will make sitting and talking to your kids easier.
For the young ones movies like:
- Hercules
- Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius
- Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes
- Spy Kids: All the Time in the World
- Justice League Unlimited
- Ben 10: Alien Force
Show just how kids can be strong!
For tweens, teens and young adults movies like:
are more direct with great conversation openers (especially for children who may keep a lot inside).
Our favorite has always been Billy Elliott
We are a family that have been involved in the arts for such a long time. I was a dancer/actress, my dad went to art school, and Ben went to film school. It’s sometimes difficult for a child who’s so involved in the arts, and I found this film to suit our situation perfectly. Billy LOVED to dance, even if his FATHER had a difficult time accepting it.
Do you have a favorite Netflix movie that opened the door to discuss bullying with your son or daughter? I’d love to add it to my list of MUST SEE movies.
We received a year of Netflix and an Apple TV for our participation in the Netflix Stream Team. All opinions are strictly our own.
