Music Reviews: If I Believe

OK…Now it’s been a while since my last review…Life has gotten pretty hectic and I’m one hell of a procrastinator. It’s also been a while since I have listened to any new music and just when I realized it, I received a copy of Rachel Milman’s first album If I Believe. Ahhhh, chick music. So I geared up the ipod and went to the gym (my new obsession).

I hopped on the elliptical (ahhh, chick running) and started with my normal warm up music (anything punk). I almost forgot to listen to the record – my bad – I just have a routine. During my cool down (bike ride,) I decided to pop on the album. I immediately dismissed it as sentimental pappy garbage.

But the next day at the gym while cooling down I popped it on again. It was just a reflex, I didn’t realize what I had done. I was confused but then I began to think (oh sh*t). While this CD is nothing special for me I hand it over to my fiancé, and she digs it. So I use my limitless powers of deduction and determine that it has the Sarah McLachlan effect. I thought I had heard Milman on Lilith tour 1998.

Ok now down to it. The songs are pretty damn good. Think sensitive guy in college with an acoustic guitar, simple and easy to listen to. Her voice is right in the medium of acoustic café, she projects well (I caught some of her live on youtube), and never hits a sour note. While not my kind of music it still works as a good record. All very light love songs but it is definitely nice chill-out café music. “Throwing Rocks at the Moon” is the obvious standout track. I really hope to see how she musically evolves because she has such a nice voice.
