Lies, Love & Life
Author: Cathy Holloway Hill
Cathy Holloway Hill’s book Lies, Love and Life reads like she is talking to you in your kitchen over a cup of coffee. The strangest thing is that this book hit my desk at that point in my life when I needed it, so I felt gifted. And to be objective, it’s one of the best books I’ve read on denial and lies.
“Unfortunately too many people ‘play pretend,’ and keep on ‘playing pretend’ even if it kills them.”
Cathy Holloway Hill’s book Lies, Love and Life reads like she is talking to you in your kitchen over a cup of coffee. I know, I know, you are all sick and tired of books telling us how to be positive
… to have a good life, to get out of the sick relationship, the horrible job. Somehow, Hill doesn’t do self help. Instead this book takes a stand. I just re-read People of the Lie by M. Scott Peck (coincidence?) and realized that my own lies are holding me back – a lot. You know what I mean. The friend who NEVER calls you. The boyfriend who takes but won’t give back. The job with no boundaries where you are a secretary and end up cleaning the carpets of your boss’s mansion “just because.” Just because you’re scared to end up with no job. It’s been deadly in my life, and I just keep saying well, it’s got to get better. I agree with Hill: it only gets worse.
So, as I’ve been sitting here with no makeup, in sweatpants and no shower the last two weeks (except when I have to go to my ‘job’ and pretend to be Mary Poppins to a really bad boss with no boundaries) I picked up Lies, Love and Life and reveled in it. As the book describes one of Hill’s clients who feels that she cannot get a job that inspires her because she doesn’t believe it possible or that she deserves it, the bell rang. BRIIING!
We all have moments and days when things seem unbearable, or just messy or just a “bad day.”
After 20 years of therapy I know when my beliefs are ruining me. Hill understands that also. As she teaches how to get off the treadmill, there is no therapy talk, no just get off your ,,,,,,,, and do it, no prosletyzing. Chapter by chapter she talks about her clients, about her own life, about denial, about lies that really are just beliefs gone sideways.
I loved this book. Part workbook, part ‘let’s just talk in the kitchen, part life coaching at its best, Hill walks you through getting the drama out of your head and your life. She doesn’t pull any punches: we have to do it ourselves. But it is certainly easier with someone on your side.
Loved it, loved it, loved it.
This is a small volume with a great heart. Like Seabiscuit, it runs with the winners. Pick it up and join me over a cup of coffee with Cathy Holloway Hill. Don’t put the artificial sweetener in the coffee = go for the real stuff. Join Hill in making your life flourish. I am!
