Holiday Gift Reviews & Giveaway: Strawberry Shortcake

When I was a junior at Rhode Island College, I had the honor of working that summer for Hasbro, a family toy business located in Pawtucket, R.I. I was a secretary for Bill Daly, VP Human Resources.

My first day was like walking into Disneyland – that tingly, excited ethereal feeling that you get when you see something wonderful. The purple, plum, and cerise hallways, magenta ceilings – and happy, happy people.

My supervisor walked me straight into the warehouse. “Ok,” he said, “pick out the toys you want for your desk.” What a dream job! Those were the days when Steven Hassenfeld stopped by your desk with a smile, and you sat across from your boss with a cup of coffee, smiling and joking. He was a jovial, kind and caring presence. From the warehouse I picked Strawberry Shortcake and Weebles. (Weebles wobble but they don’t fall down). That was my mantra! When, at the end of the summer, I was offered the job permanently by Mr. Daly, I burst into tears. I had fought very hard to get to college and I HAD to finish. I said no.

So when the Strawberry Shortcake Sweet Surprise Strawberry Shortcake Doll arrived at my door from Santa Litsky and Santa Hasbro, I started crying. Again. Had I made the wrong decision? Soon, however, I was combing her hair, drinking in her strawberry scent and admiring her modern pre-teen look! She’s a glam girl now, yet still All American Strawberry Shortcake! She comes with a freestyle wand that magically adds makeup to her darling face. Two clip barrettes add two pink hair enhancements that make her look like a movie star. And four other barrettes – just to add fun. And of course the pink comb to style that gorgeous red hair. This is one redhead to take your heart away. At 11 inches tall, she’s a doll.
