Inviting your pre-teen or teen’s friends over to hang out might score you some cool points, or whatever teen cache is called these days. You do not need a reason for your teens to have a party – “just because” is a good enough reason. Take your kiddo out for ice cream and spend some time planning a fun party at your place. Serve them a lot of food.
If there is one thing that almost goes hand in hand, it is teenagers and food. When you plan to invite a group of them over, you had better have a lot of it ready to go. It is very important to ask your teen whether or not their friends have any food allergies. They probably know, but when in doubt, be sure to reach out to the kids’ parents to find out for sure.
Make the most of the party by ordering pizza take-out or delivery. It is the perfect food for teens because they all eat it with abandon, so make sure you order extra pies. You can get a variety of pizzas with different toppings, and make sure you also order pizza with gluten-friendly options to ensure those with gluten sensitivities can eat along with everyone else.
Round out the pizza main course by adding a self-serve snack table filled with everyone’s favorite snacks. Some great options are a variety of chips, crackers, cheese slices, and a variety of cut-up fresh fruit. Serve extra fruit; you will be surprised at how much they eat of the healthy stuff.
Remember to serve drinks, too. Water is always a good choice. Set out pitchers of ice-cold water and glasses so they can help themselves after spending time outside. If you would like, teens will generally enjoy soft drinks and whatever the latest drink craze is, too.
If you have games, they will (probably) play.
Teenagers are notoriously stereotyped. They often get a bad rap for having an attitude or being in a constant state of contrarianism. While this is sometimes true, of course, teens are also at a very fun age. They still have one foot firmly set in childhood as they are trying very hard to move into adulthood. That being said, they often really enjoy playing games (other than just video games).
If the weather is nice, plan some backyard games. If there are things to do outside, teens will usually give them a try. Set up a volleyball or badminton net. Set up two or four bean bag toss or cornhole games for friendly competition. Put out a basket of soccer balls, beach balls, and any other outdoor toys you have lying around. Even a small basket of bubbles might be exciting for them since they probably haven’t played with bubbles since their preschool days.
