Say Anything is not your average teen romance. It painfully captures the agony of a first love. The usual genre conventions are still here but used in such a fashion that it really enhances the film (the film also created a few genre moments it self).
I find it very acceptable that this films cult following is a large as it is, it really is a great film. I saw this film first in the summer after high school. I had already heard about all of the iconic scenes (the boom box, the key master and such), but it did not ruin the film whatsoever.
From the minute the film begins, the view either relates to Lloyd or Diane, and from then on it is hard to rip the viewer away from the film. Did I mention the fantastic soundtrack is epic as the story?
Cameron Crowe’s directorial debut is a powerhouse. It was obviously inspired by life because no writer could dream this up. It is also impossible to hate any aspect of Say Anything except for the new cover art.
The Say Anything Blu-Ray is also magnificent, and the video quality is as good as it will get with this feature. The sound is fantastic also. But the most important part of this Blu-Ray special edition are the special features:
The Commentary:
While this is ported over from the DVD copy it is fantastic Crowe, Skye, and Cusack have so much to say. The track starts almost 30 min before the film does. It is amazing they remember the things that they did. Very entertaining and I recommend that it is watched with the Trivia track.
Say Anything… 20 Years Later:
Its nice to see the entire production crew talking about the film. Lot’s of love here but I had trouble paying attention the full 30 min.
A conversation with Cameron Crowe:
This was like a 10 minute film school special. It basically is Cameron talking about how nervous he was filming his first feature and how he overcame the fear. Really cool to see this, as I’m a giant fan of his, and this made him very relate-able.
I love Say Anything:
This was kind of lame just a bunch of comedians talking about their favorite scenes in the film. The only new special feature that was not worth watching.
Overall fantastic movie and transfer to Blu-Ray. Thank-youu 20th Century Fox for bringing back one of my generations classics.
