This DVD should not have had the affect that it did on me! I thought, oh another great family DVD when I got it, but while watching it, I found myself crying and laughing all at the same time. With a rather simple plot, this DVD features the most amazing character in the form of one 9 year and 3 month girl named Ramona. Ramona makes Harriett the Spy look boring! AND, Ramona has a secret: she refuses to be anyone but who she is. Along with Ramona, comes teenage sister Beezus, baby sister Roberta, Henry Huggins, Beezus’ boyfriend, Ramona’s friend Henry, Mrs. Meecham, her school teacher (played brilliantly by Grey’s Anatomy Dr. Yang), Dad, Mom, Aunt Bea and her boyfriend Hobart (Henry’s uncle). The story begins as an addition is under construction and Dad loses his job simultaneously.
Between Ramona’s schemes to help save the house from the bank, Aunt Bea’s close connection to Ramona, and Ramona’s twists and turns as she leaves debris and flotsam after every scheme, the movie races into the home stretch. When she gets her Dad the job he has always wanted as art teacher with the help of Mrs. Meecham, we all rise up and cheer for Ramona. Her quirky, crazy and compassionate actions drive this film. This is one of the most adorable and original characters in film today, and if you want to laugh and cry all at the same time, don’t miss this original and film that cannot possibly suppress Ramona’s joys and pains at growing up as her own self.
