Modern Family: The Complete Third Season 

I watch a lot of tv these days. Three years ago, everyone thought the family-based sitcom was dead – and then along came the series Modern Family, to reinvent it. Now the show is hitting its stride. There is something to be said about consistency in the sitcom world. Modern Family if nothing else is consistent and predictable which is not a bad thing at all. This just means the show knows what is working for it and it doesn’t stretch its comedy to thin.

If you have not watched Modern Family yet you are in the stone ages or just don’t like or respect your television.

Modern Family breaks out from the home life in season three, we go to the wilds in Wyoming and to Disneyland with admirable plot devices.

By and large the show is very independent, with each episode proposing up one or more situational engagements that are neatly fixed by the 20-minute mark. The writers are skillful at keeping the characters going. Nearly every episode features three individual subplots—one for each family—and they’re often braided together cleverly, allowing for lots of interaction between family members.

There are a ton of high posts this season but a definite high point was Little Bo Bleep. Holy **** was this episode funny! You might remember some controversy surrounding this episode as it involved such a little girl yelling profanities. There is nothing funnier than a child swearing at a wedding in a techno color dress.

The third season of Modern Family looks just as good as the other two on Blu-Ray. Why fix something that isn’t broken? There are no changes to the sound design either.

However there are quite a few special features.

Each disc contains some deleted scenes about 7-9 minutes of them. On the first disc we have three features two of which have to do with the Wyoming episode and a third about Ty Burrell and his day. On disc two we also have three features one about the Christmas episode, one about Luke and Manny and the car, and one about Ed O’Neil’s star on the walk of fame. The final disc has a gag reel and a behind the scenes of the Disneyland episode.

Overall, is this the best program on network TV?

Yes, without question. But with America’s real favorite family, THE BLUTHS (Arrested Development), returning this year how does Modern Family stack up to the classics? Watch for yourself and judge. Modern Family holds itself to its own high standards in the show’s third year, with sharp writing, lovable/relatable characters, and a lot of laughs.
