Okay parents! Here we have another excellent storybook series from Scholastic Treasures (my favorite collections for children come from Scholastic!). Although these stories are made for children, let me tell you, I felt enchanted as I learned Spanish myself watching Curious George and my favorite children’s book of all time, The Dot! This series presents itself in Spanish, with one story in English. The simple language, beautiful presentation and illustrations allow children to practice and learn beginning Spanish or English. Children learn visually as well as audibly, and Scholastic presents a DVD collection that warrants our kudos as parents and teachers. The illustrations and inherent readability of these stories capture kids’ imagination, and the read along dot that follows each sentence teaches them quickly.
I wish that I had had Scholastic in the House when I was a young Mom! As a grandma, I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed teaching my grandkids from Scholastic!
Disc 1: Jorge, el monitor ciclista (6 stories in Spanish, 1 in English) (72 minutes with extras, teaching language, cooperation and friendship to children)
The fabulous Curious George is one monkey that we cannot help but love! Written by H.A., with pictures by Margaret Rey, Curious George tootles along on his bicycle and annoys everyone – until he saves the day! (Version in English also). As he rides around town, he encounters boats, newspapers and finally – the circus, where he saves the bear baby and earns everyone’s respect! I LOVE CURIOUS GEORGE!
Disc 2: 3 stories in Spanish, 1 in English) 48 minutes
Chato is the coolest cat in the ‘Hood! Several stories tell about friendly mice, Chato’s friends, and good lessons that teach kids 5 to 9 how to be a friend.
Disc 3: Harry the Dirty Dog is a classic! Harry is like all “kids’ – he hates bedtime bathing, and has great adventures avoiding his BATH. White, then black, then white, Harry holds us in laughter and fun!
All of these stories are wonderful stories and as I listened once again, in Spanish, I found myself jotting down words and laughing out loud!
