Hypothermia
It’s October and it’s time to watch some really crappy horror flicks!
Cheap looking monsters with really big heads and googly eyes and a suit that doesn’t seem to stay on. I am a fan of the cheesy sci/fi channel movies, the over the top acting and bad effects make them fun to watch, going in I was expecting that level of film making from this one. I grew up with midnight movies like Night of the Lepus and Them. This is my bread and butter! Now time for a synopsis!
Ray Pelletier just wants to spend a pleasant and relaxing weekend ice fishing with his family. Alas, Ray’s plans are ruined by the unwanted presence of the obnoxious big city father and son duo of Steve Cote and Stevie Jr. However, the two squabbling families are forced to set aside their differences and work together after a vicious monster awakens from the cold waters of the remote frozen lake area they are staying at.
The solid acting by the able cast holds the picture together:
Rooker does his usual ace job in the lead, Blanche Baker excels as Ray’s sweet wife Helen, Wood makes the most out of his colorfully boorish character, plus there’s respectable work from Benjamin Forster as Ray’s amiable son David and Amy Chang as David’s cheery girlfriend Gina.
But, come-on it has the ROOKER in it!!!!!
The bleak snow-covered wintry landscape conveys a powerfully unsettling feeling of isolation, desolation, and vulnerability. Eric Branco’s “slick” cinematography boasts lots of lava-vision monster POV shots. The tight 73 minute running time ensures that this movie never gets dull or overstays its welcome.
The real thing we need to talk about here is the costume for the gillman!
Holy freaking horrible. Seriously this is the worst monster costume that I have seen in years.I’m really impressed; I laughed insanely hard when I saw the gillman. Ok, by most standards the whole movie is pretty horrid, down to the lava-vision and the sci-fi channel level acting (with the exception of the ROOKER).
On board we have a few BTS and making of features. There are also two other trailers. Not much to watch here but whatever it’s a midnight movie.
If you are into cheesy movies
this one will do. I love bad movie monster mayhem more than most. I loved the ridiculous creature! In a humorous spoof, it would have been an outrageously successful creation. But is it scary? Don’t make me answer that. Enacting every cliché that you’ve come to expect, Hypothermia simply doesn’t serve up satisfying drama or tension.
Hypothermia is available on Amazon.com and other DVD retailers.
