This should be the easiest review that I’ve ever written, but with tears still streaming down my face…I’m afraid that this wash of emotion has left me with few words. So I’ll begin with this trailer while I compost myself…




In the United States the world of dance (and the arts) is born from a very special need, or drive to create. In Communist China it was a totally different scenario. Mao’s Last Dancer is the story of the world famous ballet dancer Li Cunxin. It chronicles his life of poverty and how he was chosen to be a ballet dancer. This moving story of an artist’s quest for artistic freedom and courage is one you won’t soon forget. Chosen to represent the communist regime in the world of the arts, Li Cunxin is eventually sent to guest with the Houston Ballet. As a result he became renown as one of the world’s best ballet dancers. I only wish that I had had the opportunity to see him dance with the Houston ballet before he left the United States for Australia.

The dancing by Chi Cao, an amazing dancer tugs at the heart of any balletomane. Both with his expressive dancing as well as heart wrenching acting, Mr. Cao draws us in as he struggles with the dire opposite of living the American Dream while he worries about his family in Communist China.

This story of love and betrayal in his search for freedom is both very REAL and uplifting. The dance scenes (or which there are PLENTY) will have you doing a glissade as you are moved beyond words.

This is a one NOT TO MISS, whether you love dance, movies of struggle and freedom, or just want to learn more about the struggles of communism vs. freedom.
