Freaky Deaky

I grew up on Elmore Leonard’s pulp novels. I remember reading them for as long as I could read (well not as a child but definitely as a teen). His novels are always very entertaining and easy to work through. So as my classmates were writing book reports about The Outsiders I was writing them about The Big Bounce. This may be a huge contributing factor to why I am the way I am today. So is Freaky Deaky a straight to DVD mess or another worthwhile Elmore Leonard adaptation?

First a Synopsis!!!

While I’m still a bit muddled on the plot here is a little something. We are treated to a cynical ex-bomb squad cop Chris Mankowski, beautiful party girl Greta, a super-eccentric long-haired millionaire Woody, his loyal-ish driver/confidant Donelle, a ex-con/femme fatal Robin and her bomb-making boyfriend Skip Gibbs.

At first this film feels like it’s going to be a complete mess, but then something happens and it sucks you right into this ridiculous world. This is mostly due to the creative and interesting characters that populate this 1970’s universe. As the story moves forward each character is seemingly given their own time to shine to help bring this quirky dark comedy to life. The story is a bit all over the place, but works fairly well to due to these quirky strange characters and the bizarre story they are thrust into.

Yes the film misses more that it hits but watching Crispin Glover in his most insane role in years its completely worth it. But there are really fun moments in the film. The pacing is off and Billy Burke is such a bland actor he becomes very tiring very quickly. Everyone else makes up for this.

This is far from a perfect movie

There are some moments that just seem out of place or forced, but for the most part it works pretty well. If you are a fan of any of the other Leonard films then you will most likely enjoy this one as well as it comes across s thought it’s the same universe.
