Fanny Annie & Danny
Family dramas. Ugh. All families are kind of screwed up and unpleasant. However when the family drama is presented in an interesting way such as Happiness (Watch at your own risk) it is a breath of fresh air. Unpleasant stories about unpleasant people is the only thing that makes a family drama not feel like an boring version of Rebel Without A Cause.
Was Fanny, Annie & Danny a good representation of the family or just another stale piece of bread before the meal?
Fanny, Annie & Danny are dysfunctional adult siblings brought together by their horrific mother for the Christmas holiday. Like just about everything in Brown’s work, what seems commonplace on the surface becomes riveting in the details.
Thank God this movie didn’t suck. I was really beginning to lose faith in film for a minute. Or maybe I just like watching pathetic people being pathetic. However the movie wasn’t perfect either. I’m kind of mixed, as it finds no relief in any way – it’s cynical as hell and I’m fairly certain the director hates women.
I’m going to say it now – most of you are going to hate this movie. Geez I’m not sure if I liked it.
The acting is very good even if it really is one-dimensional. The problem with the female characters is that they are all so shrill. This really messes with the character dynamics. Honestly you could make the argument that this film is about how women destroy men’s self worth.
If uncomfortable family situations are hard for you to watch please skip this movie. Some of the dark humor was pretty funny but got too bleak for me at moments. At the same time you will surely grin during the movie as you think of your own family.
