It really is fitting that these two films were sent together. Never have I watched two films that are so similar yet I felt completely different about. A night built for me a campy action double feature. Holy sh*t, I was so prepared for this. I needed this to offset Oscar season. I really just wanted some fun, completely ridiculous,
absolutely stupid… just men on a mission God-awful fun, and I got that…kinda.
Some of you may know that I am a complete review whore, therefore I was really excited to see Knight and Day. I had heard that was a super fun over the top romp. I was dreading the adaptation of the A-Team quite a bit because it was just another lame remake of a TV show and I really did not want to sit through another Dukes of Hazard (sorry Broken Lizard crew but that movie was kind of terrible). My wife to be wanted nothing to do with these films and there was a Fashion Show marathon on so… I was alone on this mission.
First I watched Knight and Day. I was totally up for this popcorn muncher. I just wanted to sit down and turn off the brain… just watch and enjoy. Its North by Northwest, by way of Charade, and Mr. and Mrs.
Smith in the worst way possible. I really just think of it as a Diet Bond film. But for me this film just did not work. All of the elements were there but they just never really came together. It feels like a mash-up of all my favorite action comedies of the 1980s. The film takes off after about five minutes then runs at a break neck
pace. Super rogue agent Tom Cruse accidently implicates a hottie (playing a character that’s far too young for her now) in an international conspiracy. Nothing really needs to make any kind of sense from there. I had no tolerance for the films’ plot, not that it was the least bit logical. But if there is one true treasure of this film, it is Tom Cruse. He really is fantastic as the rogue agent. He is everything an action comedy star should be funny, charming and,dangerous.
Then I watched The A-Team. It really is a fun film, and I liked it for all the same reasons that I had hated Knight and Day. Just like Knight and Day the plot sucks, but in this case I really didn’t care (in a good way). I really don’t feel the film represented the A-team program well at all. If I do remember properly The A-Team was all about helping the less fortunate. In the film it’s just like any men on a mission film (see the Dirty Dozen) out to clear their name.
From this point on I want to talk about this as not adaptation but an independent entity. The characters were a lot of fun- especially Murdock. They were all very witty and ironic. That was the main difference, and this film had an excellent amount of wit. PLUS, the films’ direction and graphic work was much better. Patrick Wilson was fantastic as the evil guy after he remotely blows something up he calmly says “wow that was just like Call ofDuty.” So much fun.
Both films come with an absolute smorgasbord of special features.
- On the A-Team there is an extended-cut of the film that does not add much to the film except for a few obscenities.
- The commentary on this film was excellent; the director really brought a lot of insight into the action of the film.
All of the special features were garbage on Knight and Day.
- No commentary or insights from the director of the film.
- All of the special features were weak and just generic promo stuff.
