I didn’t see this movie when it was initially released, but I have fond memories of watching it during my freshman year of college. While the film is no stretch of cinematic genius, it is one of the most fun teen comedies of the late 90’s.
Adapted from Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew.”, 10 Things works well with it’s source material, but does not lose site of it’s pop-culture roots.
The acting is all well executed, with exemplary notes for Heath Ledger’s performance, althoug he did look a bit too old to be a high school student.
One of the first major performances of Joseph Gordon-Levitt., the two play oddballs of the same coin and have great on screen chemistry. Also noteable is Julia Stiles as the shrew Bianca.Larry Miller, who played the father hit the comedic beats perfectly. Every time he’s on screen I laughed as much as I did the first time I saw this film.
The script is smart and witty, but does not stray to far from a generic teen comedy. The direction is all very straight forward, but the real treat in this film is the acting.
Audio Commentary – This is a fun look into the film from the people who know it best, and there was a respectful moment of sileence when Heath Ledger first showed on screen. The crew are all very familiar and had some GREAT stories to tell about each other during production. They mix technical and anecdotal material well.
10 Things I Love About 10 Things I Hate About You 10 Years Later – I found that this was a little disappointintg because of the big build up on the back cover. I thought it would be longer and share more information. What they had to say could have easily been incorporated into the commentary track.
The deleted extended scenes all should have been left on the cutting room floor. There was nothing that could have changed this film very much.
I Want You To Want Me: The 10 Things I Hate About You Screen Tests – it’s always fun to see why each actor got the role.
