Delivery Man
I remember it was about a year ago that I caught Starbuck at the Florida Film Festival. I caught it as a double feature with I Declare War – this was one of the most enjoyable cinema days I care to remember since being in Florida. I Declare War a simple solid throwback escapism and Starbuck the perfect romantic comedy/situational comedy. I feel in love with Starbuck (I’ve shown it to all of my friends) just due to the fact that it is a really nice easy to watch simple film that truly understands its characters. It was wonderful.
Then the film was remade starring Vince Vaughn, and I didn’t know what to think. I always end up with this thought can they improve?
Lets see if they did.
David Wozniak (Vince Vaughn) flat broke, unreliable, delivery man for his father’s meat market, lives a debt-riddled life, and not even his girlfriend, Emma (Cobie Smulders) can count on him to be around. Upon learning Emma is pregnant with David’s child, and Emma’s telling David that he is unreliable and does not have a life, Wozniak sets out to do just that – get a life.??While working to get a life, a lawyer from a fertility clinic stops by David’s apartment to tell him that for over three years, the clinic accidentally only used his sperm, which he donated almost 700 times in order to earn some money, and is the biological father of 533 children. The lawyer tells Wozniak that, even though he signed an anonymity clause under the name Starbuck, his children are filing a lawsuit to find out who their father is.??Wanting to stay anonymous, David goes to his lawyer/friend, Brett (Chris Pratt), to fight the lawsuit. And after Brett gave David an envelope containing the profile of 142 of his kids, David sets out to meet them and be their guardian angel, all the while proving himself as a father and person to Emma.
Which brings me back to the original question? Does this film improve upon the original? Unfortunately not, however it is the same exact film as the original, word for word, shot for shot. Not a bad thing at all. The only difference is the acting in the lead – it all comes down to weather you prefer Vince Vaughn or Patrick Huard. Neither film is bad I just prefer Huard as Wozniak he was a more lovable loser to me. I enjoyed the hell out of both films. Chris Pratt definitely stole every moment that he could get his hands on as well.
All and all Delivery Man is a good movie. It is a simple feel good dramedy that is anything but a waste of time. Vince Vaughn has not been this good in years and its not his typical roll its got so much more heart than a lot of the films out there right now. Yep, I dig it while it flawed its an easy likable film.
