Whimsical, yet firmly grounded with solid advice and information, the OMG! Cookbook proves a great addition to the newly appointed college student (although I learned a lot about basic cooking myself and I am LONG out of college!). A great gift to throw in your new college student’s backpack (and don’t forget to include the kitchen essentials and appliances included in the book) so that your college student can forgo: fattening cafeteria glomp called food, fast food binges and just not eating at all!
The beginning section of the cookbook lists condiments, spices and food basics to have on hand in the college cupboard in the dorm, and if relatives are looking for useful gifts to give, the STAPLES list is a great idea.
Ledbetter also lists the essential pots, pans, and add-ons, like spatula, sifter, cutting boards (plastic and wood), aluminum foil, cookie sheet, paring knife, etc., that the student needs to cook. Laying the basics down for the preparation and storing of foods, followed by safety tips, and easy to follow recipes, the OMG! Cookbook thrusts itself into “ESSENTIAL” on the college student list of needs. The idea that our students are forming their nutrition agendas and good food habits is not just an idea – it is part of growing up and away from home, to their independence. Ledbetter even suggests starting a dorm “kitty” to buy cleaning and laundry supplies, so that no one in the room feels “taken advantage of.” Great idea! All in all, this cookbook gathers together everything a student needs to k now to spend 4 years cooking basic, nutritious and delicious meals. With many “smoothie” recipes, and “good for cram night” delights, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinners “tuned” to the student’s taste, (with tips on saving calories with alternate ingredients), this is ONE textbook I wish I could have bought at the College Bookstore!
Easy to read, easy to follow, with meals your student will love, I read this from front page to back, and started over again! Of course, as a mom and grand mom, I’ve been cooking for years – and yet, I learned things from the OMG! Cookbook. I ran to the store and bought a meat thermometer as I never have had one – that old touch and taste method we moms delight in isn’t always accurate! See, we’re never too old to learn! Or to young to start learning!
The book is illustrated by Hollis Ledbetter’s mom, Ann Sample, a known artist in her own right, and her “illustrated students” take over the book with whimsical delight!
A fine gift, and even better, a fine ESSENTIAL item, for any parent who wants their student to go away from home and grow away from home in a healthy, indispensable manner with good skills in cooking and leaving the Freshman Extra 15 Pound gain in the cafeteria, where it belongs!
Awesome job!

My daughter is not in college yet, but I think she could benefit from this cookbook! She is 14 and can't even make her own peanut butter sandwich! LOL! Thanks for sharing.

LOL – my son went from not being able to cook, to be the best of ALL of all of us, so you never know.
