Eureka! I just received the BEST kid’s CD from Recess Music.
“Big Bully” addresses everything that my 9 year old granddaughter Libby complains about – “I don’t like my best friend – I want to dump her!”, “There’s a bully at school and mom says to be nice and keep it to myself,” How come no one wants to be my friend?”
These are all issues that children deal with. And to be absolutely honest – I STILL deal with that black and white thinking that gets me no where and sends my friends screaming – what’s with HER?? So, of course, I LOVED this CD! With eerie and haunting vocals, lyrics that are relevant and MEAN something, and accompanied by dancing with joy music, “Big Bully” is my ONE recommendation for the year for EVERY parent and EVERY child! I don’t say this often – but this is the best kid’s CD to come across my, er, desk, in two years.
Recess Music’s “Best Foot Forward” series creates a fun arena for children to talk about their feelings. “Big Bully” addresses sociability problems (I call them “Boundary Issues”) that we all need to learn, especially our children. Coming from a family that was enmeshed and did not “do” boundaries, I want my grandchildren to learn them when they are at the age to learn and sustain the ways to communicate effectively and take responsibility for themselves rather than play the “blame game.”
This is the first children’s’ CD that actually deals – beautifully and positively – with kids’ real issues with bullies at school, how it’s ok to be mad at your BFF and STILL be BFFs, and how to treat other kids with respect. Couched in music that titillates, these 15 songs are AMAZING!
Songs:
- Bubba Bully, The Uncle Brothers – all bullies watch out!
- Most Valuable Player, Nancy Tucker (fab vocalist, how to have good sportsmanship)
- Time In Time Out, The Hipwaders (how to use a time out to learn how to do better!)
- Mean Ogre, Mary Kaye (this woman can SING, and this is a hysterical song!)
- Me Last Attitude, The Happy Crowd (how to be compassionate and caring)
- Enemies, Milkshake (I’m in LOVE with this group’s range, and beautiful harmonic voices) – How best friends can get angry and say “you boss me around,” – teaches children that conflict is normal in all relationships and its ok to agree not to agree, to be enemies and best friends!
- One and Only Me, Janet’s Planet – honors a child for being themselves
- Vicious Vinnie, the Hill Brothers – hilarious song about Vicious Vinnie, the bully, and how the narrator plays sick to stay out of school and avoid him, wanting to move away, and finally confiding in a teacher for help! AWESOME
- I’m Sorry, Susan Salidor – another gem with lyrics teaching kids how important it is to not be right but to be able to apologize
The rest of the songs are just as amazing!
- I Can Make a Difference, J.P. Taylor and the Academics
- No Put Downs, Lyle Cogen
- Bad Day Today, Lou del Bianco
- Don’t Bully Me, Glenn Cotton
- Wishing Well, Renee and Jeremy
WOW! Each and every song is a musical delight speaking to kids about their real problems, with a win win solution! I cannot recommend this CD highly enough – the music swells, the rhythms swing, and vocals and lyrics surpass anything that I have heard to date for children.
In the lessons of life, this is a NECESSITY for every parent and child (teachers too!). I gave it to Libby, my granddaughter and she just smiled!
Kudos to Recess Music!
Big Bully: Best Foot Forward Series is available for purchase and would make a wonderful holiday gift.
