Warning Sings, the second novel in CJ Lyons medical series, hits high notes with her (soprano) writing voice. CJ knows how to write! Fast and furious, we meet again the cast at Pittsburgh’s Angels of Mercy Emergency Department – Lydia Fiore, the new ER attending physician (introduces in Lifelines), Amanda Mason, fourth year medical student, Gina Freeman, an emergency medicine resident and Amanda’s roommate, and Nora, Halloman, the ER day-shift charge nurse.
As the action turns up the heat for the four friends and co-workers, we come to know their weaknesses, and their strengths as they collide with other staff. Amanda with Dr. Lucas Stone, neurologist, Lydia with Trey, district EMT chief and her main man, Gina and Jerry Boyle, cop and lover, and Nora, who dumps her boyfriend Seth. Lyons creates such a fireball of action it’s like watching a full season of Grey’s Anatomy…and then some, in a 358 page novel.
Add a strange neurological disease killing Dr. Lucas’ patients, Amanda’s reluctance to admit she has the same disease, Gina’s diva attitude and a horrible crime scene, and you get the basics.
CJ Lyons, a pediatric doctor and emergency doctor, throws her intimate knowledge of the ER into our lap, and creates characters and plot that crackle and whip as we race to the end. The only thing I didn’t like – I’m chewing the nubs of my nails until I can order the remaining three novels.
Much more than a romantic genre novel, Warning Signs brings us to the edge of the frantic lives of the residents, students, doctors and nurses at Angels of Mercy, and packs the plot with action that jumps from page to page. I stayed up all night with this one, and it was worth it.
