I expected another “quaint, little town novel” from this book and instead discovered a vibrant, eccentric world that once I entered I didn’t want to leave. When Mark and Pam Walker decide to leave their real lives and move to Lumby to buy and restore the ancient Montis Abbey, they encounter a town that doesn’t cotton to newcomers. Life is simple and the country is beautiful in Lumby. The town is driven by Simon Dixon and his Sheriff’s report in the town’s only newspaper, “The Lumby Lines.” Hidden in the small waves of the small town are lives and secrets of great consequence, revolving around the Beezer family and the Abbey. William Beezer, the old man who owns “The Lumby Lines” and his sons Dennis and grandson Brian are not on good terms. And the secret of two fires that destroyed much of the abbey resides in their hearts. As Mark and Pam relentlessly pursue the history of the Abbey so that they can restore it historically and turn it into an inn, they are mysteriously given journals kept by the Brothers who inhabited the Abbey.
A book filled with love, compassion and connectedness, the “Lumby Lines” swirls around the orbit of the Walkers and the Beezers and the townspeople to end in triumph. Lots of plot twists and just darn good writing wrap this book around you and leave you waiting for the next book in the series.
Wonderful tale of people in all small towns and families who are flawed but do the best that they can.
