Brain Buster: (page 264, The CIG to Psychology)
An unusually large number of Facebook friends and wallposts and the use of glamorous pictures for main profile photos (as opposed to snapshots) may be red flags for narcissism because narcissists use Facebook the same way they use their other relationships – for self promotion with an emphasis on quantity over quality.”
Ok, readers, before you all run to expunge those glamour girl or Neanderthal Man snapshots, realize that this is taken out of context. The CIG’s are fun and informative. Although I have suffered from depression for years (antidote: lots of therapy and hard work to develop a more realistic perspective – i.e., I am not the center of the universe!) I didn’t read myself into borderline personality, narcissism, or paranoid schizophrenia as I was gulping down facts, interesting articles and definitions. Most of us at large have some of the traits of personality disorder – but as the CIG to Psychology points out, don’t panic. It’s normal. We live in a stressful, competitive world, where technology has made relationships with each other even more near and dear. The human voice works for me much better than an email. I can’t live without my girlfriends! So this guide, while a wonderful aid if you have people you love that do have these diagnoses, gives a wonderful picture of genetics, how the brain works, adreneline, the mind and body learning connection, emotions and what they create – or destroy. It reads like a beloved novel! Also, it is a clean perspective on how we can improve some of our insights into the mind and the minds of those we love, although we all have faults and majoy faultlines. I love the Complete Idiots Guides – you can pick out any chapter and learn facts, myths, research, guidance – they are reference books that demand attention in all of our libraries.
This is one of my favorites – always clear, concise – and I learned alot about myself both positive and negative and in between – and I sighed with relief from every page!
By the way, did you know that Kim Basinger is agoraphobic (fear of the marketplace) – and she won the battle to get out of the house. So if you had an anxiety attack yesterday while trying to write your latest blog review, know that you are not bonkers! And grab this book!
Excellent writing, clear anecdotes, fun and informative – and just downright interesting! Loved it.
