The Blonde

Ok ,I have read some really strange fiction about Marilyn Monroe and Jack Kennedy but this one takes the cake.  The writing is good.  The plot is farcical and unbelievable.  I don’t think any of us believes that Jack Kennedy loved Marilyn Monroe.  Nor do I think that Frank Sinatra treated her like a little sister.  Just my opinion.

From 1948 through the Cold War years, the plot of this book rests on the fiction that Marilyn was given a promise by the Soviets that she would see her father if she seduced Jack Kennedy the Senator and spied on him relating everything he told her to her manager, a strange accented Russian.  We hear about the old stories of Marilyn, the made up stories, and some new fiction stories.  Then Marilyn falls in love with Jack etc., etc., etc.  The Bay of Pigs Disaster.  The sexual needs of the Kennedy’s.  The way Pat Lawford felt about Jackie.  On and on.  I read until the last chapter and I simply lost interest.  However, I think because we have read so much of the Marilyn/Kennedy debacle that I felt much of this had been done before in one way or another.  Also, I simply did not see Kennedy as a compassionate sort toward his mistresses so the plot fell by the wayside for me.

Now, this novel is not a total write off. 

Many people would find the novel entertaining, as it follows Norma Jean’s life as a girl, her ability to seduce to survive and the true loneliness and abandonment she felt.  Her marriage to Arthur Miller rings true from the pages of the novel.

If you love Marilyn you might truly enjoy this Marilyn as spy thriller, but I simply could not grab the plot as believable.

That is just me.
