After reading Duane Swierczynski’s Hell and Gone, I felt tantalized, that feeling that overcomes you when you find an author that sits you down then knocks you off the chair. Tantalized, Mesmerized, Stupefied (in the worlds of John Nash, A Brilliant Mind).
Point and Shoot, the last novel in a spectacular trifecta, (Fun and Games, Hell and Gone, Point and Shoot) delivers, once again, one of the audacious characters in recent crime fiction: Charlie Hardie. With Hardie holding his hand on the slot machine, Swierczynski delights us, as his plot pulls demonics, magic, creativity, evil and fun out of the rabbit’s hat. Dialing through the pages of Point and Shoot, in the guise of Charlie Hardie, we discover the madness of an unkillable ex police consultant who simply cannot stay away from the Accident People, a group of nasty loony tunes who pull the political strings of power over – everyone. A missile homing in, Point and Shoot ups the ante, chucks reality into the wind, and entertains like an organ grinder’s monkey!
In Hell and Gone, Charlie Hardie escapes the Accident People after they have set him up as the patsy for a murder, then incarcerated him into an inescapable underground prison. In Point and Shoot, the Cabal as they now call themselves, have sent Hardie into space, in a low gravity satellite space capsule, and placed their biggest secrets into the capsule. Hardie must stay in space orbiting alone for a year, and then he is “forgiven.” When someone crashes into his capsule, they both fall, along with the capsule, into the Pacific Ocean and manage to survive when the stranger swims with Hardie under his arm to land. But who is this stranger? Should Hardie trust him? Or is he part and parcel of the Cabal.
Charlie has not seen his family in 8 years due to the Cabal. As Hardie fights to get home to his family to save them from The Cabal, we find out the secret of why no one can kill him and incorrigible Charlie and his side kick treads across torn circuits to save his family.
The ride is spectacular folks. Come on, Duane, don’t tell us this is the end of Charlie Hardie!! Waiting with baited breath for the next trilogy
