Not For Profit
Author: Glenn Shepard, MD
First Chapter:
James Patterson Wannabe.
As I read:
good job, Dr. Shepard.
With all the elements of staccato chapters, well prescribed plot, and a thrust of a few syringes and some meds, Shepard’s characters pop from the page. Very nice debut novel, with pop goes the weasel ending!
Dr. Scott James is a mess. He’s a mere plastic surgeon charged with two murders. Obsessed with orchids, James is simply not the murder type; but when his anesthesiologist, Dr. Carey, is killed immediately after James has given his office manager, Ethel Keyes a boob job, James looks good for the murder. Then someone dopes up Keyes and she almost dies on the table. The last one to see her – her surgeon, Dr. James. The media picks up the story and the headlines state Dr. James was having an affair with his office manager, Keyes. James’ wife, Alicia, leaves him taking all their money. Detective Pete Harris knows James is innocent but the mayor demands his arrest so Harris arrests him. His bond is $2 million; James is broke and can’t get into his office or work. Someone bails him out – whom?
Harris tells James he has to find the killer or Dr. James is going down for murder one.
Charlie Watson, the head of JacksonCityHospital, where Dr. James performs his surgery, was Dr. James best friend – once upon a time. But when James wrote a letter to the editor defaming Watson for putting the non-profit hospital on the market to a huge conglomerate, they became instant enemies. Now Watson wants James in jail – why?
Al-Qaeda operatives are in the area. When Ethel Keyes becomes the only one to help James and offer him a place to stay, things start getting stranger. Keyes says she’s CIA – but is she?
Join the roller coaster ride that Shepard shoots at the reader…
…for his writing IS similar to James Patterson – and in a good way! Super fast, super tense. Only one criticism – Detective Harris’s colloquial vernacular. And a very small criticism it is!
