Shriek~!  Shriek~!  He’s a WHINER, a pity pot, a … well, that’s what I thought after the first chapter.  AND THEN I fell in love with Evan Handler’s 2^nd memoir (his first memoir is Time on Fire).

Evan Handler is an actor, journalist and screenwriter, a health care advocate, and the list goes on and on. In his early twenties, he spent 5 years fighting and winning an almost terminal form of cancer.  Then he went on with his life, as his new memoir proceeds to tell.

With a dark humor, the ability to laugh at himself, and a writing style that allows Handler to let you inside of all the emotions and accomplishments he has achieved, Handler holds us in the palm of his hand.  As he spins his tale of hospital life (ugh), incompetent doctors, and his occasions of despair, he rounds the curve with stories about his acting career, and his friends, both dead and alive, as well as his bad curve with women.

When he finds the right woman, however, Handler makes the right moves – he marries her. 

This book is tantalizing, full of honesty written in prose that gives you goosebumps and makes us stand up and hurrah when Handler gets the roles; it is totally human.  A gifted writer, Handler’s new memoir follows an older one, Time on Fire My Comedy of Terrors, written ten years ago about his diagnosis and his fight to take care of himself against all odds, fighting his doctors and finding a hospital that wasn’t trying to kill him, rather than heal him.  Amazing stories, both memoirs show Handler’s talent in life and his talent in overcoming death.
