“Faster than a speeding bullet” accounts for The Nowhere Man’s dynamic drama, and ensures us a first seat on the bus to the stratosphere as Evan Smoak (Orphan X in an experimental government program that stole orphans and programmed them as killing machines) appears for the second time.  Breaking from the program, but keeping his beloved mentor, Jack, Evan now kills to provide justice for the helpless.  It is what drives him to assuage the guilt of what he was trained to do as a child.  By word of mouth, people needing help can dial 1-855-2-NOWHERE and Evan will do what he has to in order to find and assist the victims of crime.

Perhaps, you are thinking, is this original enough to create the furor that a madscape new criminal character needs to succeed in the crime novel genre?  I can assure you, James Bond sits in admiration of this electrifying novel.

Evan knows that someone – or something – is following him.  And yet he can only hide so much.  When Evan kills a mob member named Hector Contrell, his people in the form of a debonair lunatic named Rene finds Evan – and torture him in an enclosure he cannot escape from.  Rene is the man that Evan has been trying to take down as he is a sex trader and torturer.  One of his victims, a girl, has asked Evan for help.  As Evan is giving up, Jack comes back from the dead (Evan saw him shot himself) to save his best friend in honor.

The difference?  Evan Smoak is caring and resourceful, and lives a life of danger in order to make up for the guilt he carries when he was forced to kill.  In a plot that simply winds around like a clock, The Nowhere Man binds the reader to every page.  Great job, Hurwitz.
