Aaron Littman is the quintessential NYC lawyer:  chairman of the best law firm in the city, Cromwell Altman, attentive husband, good father and founder of Cromwell Altman’s Sam Rosenthal’s protégé.  Sam runs Cromwell Altman with Aaron at his side; Sam considers Aaron his son.  As one of the most powerful men in New York City, Rosenthal considers Aaron not only his son, but his successor at the helm of Cromwell Altman.

Aaron is a good man, smart but weak.  In one unconsidered moment, Aaron starts an affair with Federal judge Faith Nichols.  And when Faith lets him go, Aaron makes the mistake of bringing a case to her court, which he loses, badly.  Enter Nikolai Garkhov, terrorist, all around bad guy, and money launderer for the Russian Mafia.  When Nikolai is served to come before the jury for an indictment, he demands that Aaron be his criminal lawyer.  Aaron says no.  And Nikolai, who knows about the affair with Judge Faith Nichols, blackmails him into taking him on as a client.  If Aaron refuses, Nikolai will kill both Nichols and Littman’s careers by going to the media with their in discretionary affair.

Simultaneously, Faith is up for a spot on the Supreme Court, and the caveat is she has to find Nikolai guilty or she will not get the coveted spot.  As Faith and Aaron find out about Nikolai’s treachery, Faith is found murdered in Central Park, bludgeoned to death.  And Aaron is the only suspect.  As Aaron and Sam stand together to fight for Aaron’s life and marriage, this tensely plotted murder mystery ramps up with a twist for an ending that I never saw coming.

Mitzner’s writing style is unique in this novel, and the plot is well done.  Losing Faith grabs the reader with attention to detail and criminal proceedings that reek of authenticity, in the vein of John Grisham.  The originality of writing turns this novel into not only a great read for crime fans, but a unique and telling tale of one man’s fight to get his life back – at any cost.
